The impact of Hurricane Harvey continues to have a highly challenging ripple effect. While this is felt most prominently in Texas, other geographic areas also are experiencing the consequences.

For example: an estimated one million cars and trucks may have been destroyed in the aftermath of Harvey’s wind, torrential rain, and subsequent flooding. That number, includes cars owned by Houstonians and those parked in dealerships, would mean that this hurricane destroyed more vehicles than any other disaster in our history.

The auto insurance industry applies two categories to flood damage. Economical car flood damage means that the car is salvageable—the (fresh) water didn’t rise above the tires, the electrical system and engine were spared. Uneconomical car flood damage results from the car being submerged for days, with salt water compromising the electrical system, engine, block, and interior.

The majority of Houston’s auto damage falls into the uneconomical category. The harsh reality is that up to a million cars need to be removed.

NATCO has long partnered with other companies to help remove the physical impact of natural disaster. When the flood waters recede and the roadways are passable, cars and trucks need to be removed from their locations, including houses, apartment complexes, streets, and dealerships.

Those damaged vehicles need to go somewhere, out of the way. Emergency crews need to work with minimal impedance. Rebuilding crews need to remove debris and bring in new materials. Dealerships need to make room for fresh inventory.

What typically happens (unfortunately, we note that the logistics companies involved have all too much experience with these situations) is that staging areas are set up, in places removed from population density.

A good example: Seth Angel, president and general manager of the Royal Purple Raceway, 35 miles east of Houston, offered his 400 acres for housing up to 100,000 vehicles. Cars are delivered, and insurance adjusters swarm the area to assess and begin the processing of claims. Along with that, lights and generators and security fencing must be trucked into these areas.

We’re always troubled by the enormous losses as a result of such natural disasters. At the same time, we’re honored to contribute to rebuilding efforts.

Our approach—and our ongoing goal—is to coordinate delivery of your order in a safe, timely, and protected way.

“Protected” here means both physical protection against the elements and insurance coverage against any unforeseen possibilities.

As a broker, NATCO maintains insurance coverage compliance with the FMCSA. This coverage includes an active $75K surety bond, a $1 million general liability insurance policy, and $100,000 in contingent cargo insurance.

Above and beyond these requirements, we also provide supplemental cargo insurance per load. (The industry calls this a “transactional cargo insurance.”)

We contract with Cargoshield for these policies. In fact, NATCO was to very first company to use their services. They provide an “All-Risk” insurance policy, which they define as covering:

“any physical loss/damage from any external cause, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. This insurance will also cover things not normally covered in your trucker insurance policy, like Acts of God, unattended vehicles, damage from strike and riot, and hijacking, to name a few.”

Through Cargoshield, we are able to purchase all-risk insurance per delivery, including the disclaimer and declaration, with the ability to provide it immediately to our customers through an automated system.

In the event of damage or loss to equipment, Cargoshield pays the claims to appropriate parties within 30 days.

This scenario takes all affected parties out of the picture, which allows us to quickly rectify any claim situation.

That is: we trust Cargoshield’s expertise in handling such matters. It proactively prevents delays and minimizes the unpleasantness of any unfortunate situations.

Nobody wants cargo damage or loss. If and when it does, we’re here to streamline the process.
